Welcome to 2014

Altona City Theatre is very excited to announce our 2014 production season!

First of the year is our annual pantomime, or ‘The Panto’ as it is more commonly known. In 2014, we will be dusting off our glass slippers, taking the pumpkin for a drive and getting home before midnight with our production of "Cinderella". With this production, we welcome Tim Maloney to the role of Director. Tim has been a familiar face throughout theatre in the Western suburbs, and we are very excited to have him on board for the panto. Auditions for this will be later this year, so stay tuned for updates on that. The panto is always a great environment for first time performers, as well those more seasoned veterans who enjoy having a bit more fun, and anyone in between.

In July, we will be picking a pocket or two, asking for more and considering yourselves our friends with "Oliver!". This much loved family classic will have you singing along to the tunes, long after you have left the theatre. Based on the Dickens novel, it will delight you with its drama and outstanding musical numbers. ‘Food, Glorious Food’, ‘I’d Do Anything’, ‘Where is Love?’, ‘Consider Yourself’, ‘As Long As He Needs Me’, ‘Who Will Buy’ and ‘Reviewing the Situation’ are musical theatre classics.. We welcome back Scott Bradley to the role of Director, having previously directed ‘Aladdin’ in 2012. Scott’s previous directing credits also involve "Bare" and "Spring Awakening" with Parcell Productions in Geelong.

Moving even further into our show calendar for next year, we come to October. 25 years ago, a musical opened that would capture everyone’s imaginations. "FAME" is the well-known story of a group of New York performing arts students and their journeys from freshmen to seniors. Set during the last years of New York City’s celebrated High School for the Performing Arts, FAME is a bittersweet but ultimately inspiring story of a diverse group of students as they commit to four years of gruelling artistic and academic work. The title song ‘Fame’, sung by Irene Cara, became one of the most universally recognizable movie themes; reaching number one in the singles charts of six countries. With that, we are extremely proud to announce Krystal Holzer in her directorial debut with this production. Not a lot of things match Krystal’s passion for theatre, so we’re excited to have her on board, and look forward to working with her on this production.

We are looking for expressions of interest for the roles of Choreographer and Music Director for both "Oliver!" and "Fame". If you are interested in either of these, please contact us at secretary@altonacitytheatre.com.au with a brief resume and statement outlining why you are keen and what you can bring to the production.

And there we have our 2014 season. Hopefully we’ll see you at auditions, or in the audience. We’re very excited by these three shows, and the people already involved with them. ACTion Youth Theatre, our youth arm of the company, will be announcing their 2014 production shortly, so stay tuned for that.

"Tribute – A Rock Legends Revue" opens shortly, so make sure to book now and secure your tickets. It is a wonderful journey through time, looking back at those performers who we lost too soon, but whose music created the soundtrack to our youth, no matter when it was we grew up. Their music lives on though through the wonderful cast that we have assembled, and it would be a shame to miss. I promise that you will be dancing in your seat by the time the night is through. I look forward to seeing you soon at the theatre.
