Audition Requirements
Vocal:
You will be required to prepare one song. Please consider the style of the show and the character(s) you are auditioning for when choosing a song, but make it loud…and make it funny. There will be NO A’capella or CDs/backing-tracks. You must bring sheet music and our accompanist will be happy to play it for you. You may bring your own piano player if this makes you more comfortable. The sheet music must be in the desired key (we will not transpose), and please write in any slight edits you may need.
If the song is a twelve page epic, please choose the bit that highlights your range and talents. You won’t get through it all!
Acting:
At the audition you will be given some script to read. Of course, acting is not just something you do with words, your acting during the singing will also be considered. Please arrive with enough time before your audition to become comfortable with the read we supply you.
Dancing:
You may be required to do a small dance audition with our Choreographer during your audition, so please wear suitable clothing and footwear.
Lastly:
Don’t be nervous – we will try and make the process as enjoyable as possible.
Relax. Enjoy. Don’t worry if you mess up – we want to see what you CAN do, and we will conveniently ignore any mistakes you make.
PS Learn your song off by heart! Extra points are always awarded for people who are prepared!!
Character Descriptions
Seymour Krelbourne:
Male, aged anywhere from 18-30’s
Tenor, Low Bb to Top A
Sweet and well meaning, he doesn’t always get it right. (if ever). He is the “meek” that inherits the earth. Seymour has a whole lot f insecurity going on, but as the show progresses and the plant grows more powerful, so does Seymour’s confidence. Comic timing a must. This role has a bigger need for acting chops than you’d expect.
Audrey:
Female, aged 20’s-30’s.
Alto Belter, but needs a sweet sound at times. Low A to Belted D.
The bleached blond secret love of Seymour’s life. If you took Judy Holiday, Carol Channing, Marilyn Monroe and Goldie Hawn, removed their education and feelings of welf-worth, dressed them as a 1940’s film-noir vixen with a bit of wilting flower thrown in… that’s Audrey.
Orin Scrivello (DDS):
Male, late 20’s-30’s.
Baritone, Low A to top F.
Demonic, sadistic, egotistical and completely self-centered, Orin’s addiction to causing others pain is both his motivation for life, and the eventual cause of his death. Think of Jimmy Cagney crossbred with Kenickie from Grease. But more evil.
The actor will also perform all the other minor roles as scripted – Mrs. Luce, Skip Snip, Customer #1, and a whole bunch of others. If you’re not into wearing women’s clothes – don’t audition for this role.
Mr Mushnik:
Male, 40’s-60’s.
Baritone, Low Ab to top F.
This almost retirement-aged Jewish store owner has pretty much one thing at his core – self preservation. He has somewhat fatherly tendencies towards Audrey, but funnily enough, NOT towards Seymour, who he eventually adopts. His personality has the ability to be conniving and dark, but then turn on a dime and be sweet, happy and the life of the room.
Audrey II (The Plant):
Male, Booming bass/baritone, funky afro-american sound. Low F to top G.
But….. If a female voice can pull off the attitude, I might be convinced. 😉
The plant is the reason everything in the show occurs. To this end, the personality ranges from gently persuasive to murderously sadistic. Morals aren’t an issue for this big green guy – it isn’t human! (it eats them!)
Preference is for the voice talent to also be the puppeteer, but not essential.
Ronette, Chiffon, Crystal (The Trio):
Females, age indeterminate.
Must sound funky, soulful, jazzy and huge with every note sung. Ranges from Low Alto to supremely high belt.
They are the greek chorus of the show. Everyone knows they exist, but don’t realise that their main purpose in life is to carefully push and prod the story (mainly via Seymour) through all of it’s paces, to it’s bloody end. They need to be sassy. They need to carry the right attitude at every moment. They need to be fit – they will be on stage in some form or another from start to finish. Or as much as possible.
Decent level of dance ability is preferred.
