July 2012

THE BOY FROM OZ

Directed/Choreography by Narelle Bonnici & Sam Symons
Musically Directed by Dan Heskett

The Boy From Oz is a musical biography/tribute to the late great Peter Allen. Peter Allen was born in the outback Australian town of Tenterfield in 1944 and made his entertainment debut at the age of five. As a teenager he became a pop star and then toured Asia, where he met Judy Garland and become engaged to her daughter, Liza Minnelli.

In the US, Peter enjoyed the highs of success by winning an Oscar, selling out performances in Radio City Music Hall, and receiving adulation when he returned to Australia. There were also plenty of lows – breaking up with his wife, staging a Broadway flop, the death of his partner and his own battle with illness.

Peter Allen had an extraordinary life which has become a magnificent musical, and we look forward to staging it at Altona next year.

Auditions will be held in February 2012

SWEENEY TODD

Directed by Dean Mitchelmore
Musically Directed by Ian Nisbet

Sweeney Todd is Stephen Sondheim’s musical thriller masterpiece about a 19th century London barber who seeks bloody vengeance against the man who framed him and had him sent to a penal colony for 15 years.   On his return to London, Sweeney Todd finds his wife gone and his daughter Johanna under the evil Judge Turpin’s protection.   In order to exact his revenge, he opens a barber shop in a room over the shop of Mrs. Lovett, the proprietress of a struggling pie shop.

Todd’s thirst for blood soon expands to include not only the Judge but also the barber’s own customers.  Mrs. Lovett hits upon the idea of grinding up the bodies to use the flesh in her meat pies – which become extremely popular with the citizens of London…

Professionally this black comedy was nominated for 27 Drama Desk Awards (winning 17) and 19 Tony Awards (winning 10). It was recently adapted into hit Tim Burton musical film, where it was nominated for four Golden Globes (winning two), three Oscars (winning one) and two BAFTA awards. We look forward to Sweeney Todd returning to the Altona stage after 20 years.
